We live in unpredictable “VUCA” times, as epitomized by the huge impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all levels of society which also highlighted the vulnerability of modern society. Universities and research institutions are no exception. However, we have an important mission to create a post-corona society by seeking solutions to social issues that have arisen. In this session, the knowledge of experts, including local government leaders, will be shared and discussed with the audience.

Today’s world after globalization, as COVID-19 took every country by surprise, challenges the creativity of mankind to re-assemble transdisciplinary knowledge and rethink the existence of human society. The University of Tsukuba and National Cheng Kung University have established a consortium with Southeast Asian institutions on four themes—environment and disaster, aging care and infectious diseases, design and communication, and technology and policy—to benefit emerging society through raising new questions and transforming existing knowledge. In the main session, we will introduce institutions and projects in this consortium. Subsequently, four sub-sessions will be held to discuss research and education in progress.

This is a session jointly presented by researchers from College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University (OSU) and  Faculty of Human Sciences and Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences at University of Tsukuba (UT).  The purpose of the session is to present and discuss potential collaborative research topics/themes which involve researchers from OSU and UT regarding  “diversity/inclusion” and “education”. During this 3-hour session, a group of faculties in the field of sports sciences, sociology, psychology, education and special education will a)synthesize research studies pertaining to inclusive education in the field and identify research gaps and b)propose potential and collaborative research topics. This session will be done using the latest virtual conference platform.　(This session will be done collaboratively with “Interdisciplinary and International perspective on Diversity and Inclusion: Current Issues in LGBTQ People”.)

Food-related health problems and lifestyle-related diseases, issues of food security, and the increasing cost of medical care are just some of the many challenges society now faces. A fusion of agricultural and medical sciences is needed to find solutions for societies facing these myriads of problems. This symposium will be held on the theme of “solutions to global issues related to food and health” with a focus on the efforts of the International Joint Degree Master’s Program in Agro-Biomedical Science in Food and Health (GIP-TRIAD).

This Japan-based research project began in FY2020 in collaboration with Japanese language education and research organizations in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in Central Asia, Vietnam in Southeast Asia and Egypt in Africa in order to develop Japanese language education standards, teaching materials and human resources to use them. As time passes and social systems change, the future challenges faced by each region are sure to become challenges that will have to be solved in every region. We are working together to jointly develop efficient learning methods by continuing to think about the content and methods of Japanese language education and by providing learners with mechanisms for autonomous learning.

The keynote speech, presented by Dr. Andrei Bekes, will be followed by a discussion with the floor on what kind of cooperation is needed  in terms of “human resource development,” “joint education,” and “development of teaching materials” while overcome the problems posed by the pandemic. We look forward to an active exchange of ideas and information.

For the past five years, our Department of Bioresource Sciences (Master’s Program) has been promoting international education and research collaboration with the National Taiwan University (NTU) through the Master’s Program Double Degree Program (DDP). In the future, in order to further develop and evolve research, we will invite relevant faculty from NTU and hold short seminars for college students. A ceremony for signing an agreement to extend the DDP over the next five years will also be implemented to further strengthen the relationship with the NTU.

“Student Presentations“ meeting has been held annually to advance research activities and facilitate international exchanges for graduate students. Selected students will also have short presentations. This session is organized by Faculty of Medicine,  Doctoral Program in Medical Sciences, Ph.D Program in Human Biology, and Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Neuroscience.

A recent report on the marine microplastic problem mentioned the plastic debris have become even more nano-ordered, and the amount of harmful substances adsorbed on the surface has also become enormous. To cope with it, a technology applying colloid aggregation phenomena is important to recover microplastic debris on one hand. Another technology for utilizing biomaterials to develop marine-degradable packaging alternative to plastics from paper, cellulose nanofiber, and biomass plastics on the other hand. This session provides a place to report and discuss these multifaceted initiatives.

Modern science is seeking for the analysis of pure elements as well as understanding of their complex interactions. Colloid science can be regarded as the latter. Obtained results have been utilized not only for the industrial production, but many aspects of environment, microbiology, food and human health care. University of Tsukuba has a uniquely long history in the study of colloidal flocculation from the period of its former Tokyo University of Educational University. In this session, we discuss the engineering science of colloidal domain in life and environmental science placing an emphasis on colloidal flocculation to elucidate the direction of future development.

In 2020, states are taking emergency measures to deal with the outbreak of the COVID-19. Civil liberties are typically prioritised in the constitutional norm. However, public health and public welfare tend to be prioritised in emergency measures to combat the COVID-19, and civil liberties tend to be limited. It is crucial to rethink which constitutional norm should be prioritised in this unprecedented situation. Based on this background, this session examines the cases in France, Switzerland, the United States and Japan, and explores the possibility of legislation and interpretation of constitutional laws from multidisciplinary perspectives.

The purpose of this session is to share the latest findings on current issues in LGBTQ people and to discuss new action to resolve the issues with participants.
(1) Speakers from various groups which have been working on the clinical and academic fields will share their experience and thoughts.
(2) The speakers will exchange their views based on the topics provided in the 1st part and help the participants understand the key points of the challenge in LGBTQ and enrich their understanding of and approach to the problems.

  This session is the sequel of Tsukuba-Hamburg Young Scholars’ Workshop of Buddhist Studies in the framework of the International Education and Research Laboratory Program. The first workshop was held in January 2018 in Hamburg and the second at TGSW2018.
Buddhist textual studies encompasses a broad set of approaches. Students and teachers (/Professors) from both universities discuss on the methodology and guidelines in studying the products of religious culture which survive over 1000 years. The session consits of students’ presentations that focus on particular texts they work on followed by questions and answers, comments, and discussion.

The purpose of this session is to provide opportunities with researchers from various fields to share recent trends of the study of language based on various kinds of data resources. Recent big or contexualized data have opened a new possibility for linguistics and related fields, which have been becoming more and more inter-dependent. Thus, the “Trans-Border” or “Interdisciplinary” perspective is necessary.  This session especially focuses on naming and language contact with big data. To address the future energy challenges, while keeping the environment-issue in mind, we require smart and renewable technologies for both energy production and energy storage devices, such as solar-cells, thermoelectric devices, rechargeable battery, and photocatalyst for solar-fuel production Still, all these technologies should be obtained using innovative and efficient materials that must be sustainable in terms of abundance, functionality, and processing technology. Here, we will discuss green synthesis routes of various innovative materials, and their application in solar-cells, thermoelectricity. . and battery. Extension of transborder research framework within Asia and Africa will be discussed for the solution of sustainable energy-future.

South and Southeast Asia is one of the major agricultural hubs of the world, facing challenges of climate change and feeding the fast-growing population.  To solve the crisis, a transboundary approaches along with AI and BIG data for bioinformatics are required  to increase yield and minimize pre-post harvest losses in intangiable climates for driving the sustainable development goal (SDG) for feeding the major part of 9 billion population by 2050 (Society 5.0 SDG 1 &2). The aim of the session is to focus on the  solution through smart IoT and AI-based agriculture included genetic adaptation against drought and pest infestation, minimizing agricultural fertilizers and pesticides application to ensure food security.

An understanding of depiction is required in all fields of scientific research. Initially described by language, approaches for verbalizing artistic processes and visual information (e.g. arts-based research, design thinking, visual methodologies) have been gaining more attention. In this session, we will explore how the Faculty of Art and Design contributes to scientific research through art theory exchanging with other research areas.

University of Tsukuba started the emergency research program named, “Employing the University Wisdom to Fight Against the COVID-19 Crisis” as early as April. 2020. Researchers with the vast variety of disciplines such as physical health, psychological health, international behavioral difference, school lockdown, drug modeling and even survival of artistic activities started stuying in the program. The program proves the real value of university that accommodate all kinds of disciplines.

Sustainable development goals (SDGs) are aimed at a society in which no one is left behind. To this end, it is necessary to establish a system in which the voices of diverse people are equally reflected in politics. Therefore, this poster session will examine the equality of people’s expression of interest in politics, focusing on gender, the disabled and ethnicity, and discuss how to address the remaining issues.

The group of “Policy and Planning Sciences in Tsukuba,” which launched its degree programs in 2014 earlier than the whole university, has accumulated fruitful research based on mathematical approaches to create solutions and services for various social challenges. This session will introduce the efforts and results of each laboratory that forms the group of “Policy and Planning Sciences in Tsukuba” and explore the direction of future research and educational development through dialogue with the participants.

As the momentum for evidence-based policy making grows, it is necessary to accumulate empirical studies to create scientific evidence for effective crime prevention. In response to this, joint research with police departments and local governments and research using open crime data have been conducted in recent years. In this session, we introduce recent empirical research on crime and discuss the direction of future research with the audience.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed our life in many ways. During the last few months, all of us are forced to keep social distance and stay home. Under this situation, we are experiencing various problems related to “diversity and inclusion”. These include assurance of equal opportunities for foreign citizens and students, the elderly, disabled, sexual minorities, etc. This produces anxiety and possible aggression derived from social isolation, mental and physical stress caused by remote lectures, meetings, and so on. We believe that scientific research conducted at the Faculty of Human Sciences can greatly contribute to solve many of these issues. In this digital poster session, we will present the outcome of ongoing research as well as perspectives for future research projects.

Emerging technologies can fundamentally transform us. Applying these latest technologies in sports, a new competition has emerged: the Cybathlon is a Swiss-invented international competition, where participants with disabilities overcome daily-life challenges with the help of technology. The use of emerging technologies in sports raises ethical questions that need to be discussed with different key stakeholders, such as sports persons, technology companies, sports federations, and the public. We will facilitate an ethical conversation with key stakeholders alongside the Olympics and Paralympics in order to co-elaborate and publish a Swiss-Japan declaration on the ethics of technology in sports.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics has been postponed and there have been far-reaching effects on the sporting world, professional and academic. In addition to the first postponement in the modern Olympic history, the Covid-19 outbreak has negatively influenced the opening of professional soccer leagues and major leagues abroad, tradiational SUMO tournamnets in Japan among others, including effect on the graduate research at diverse levels in sport. Against this backdrops, sports organizations, teams and athletes and studnets are working hard to overcome these difficulties. This joint session between TIAS and the Sports and Physical Education Center, will examine and disclose the latest research topics and interests in sports field, sport research trends and the response to PE courses and sports club activities at the University of Tsukuba from various perspectives.

The purpose of this study was to describe and explain experiences and pedagogical practices of PE teachers in elementary PE programs. Situated in positioning theory, the research approach was descriptive– qualitative. The primary sources of data were a survey questionnaire, face to face interviews, and follow-up e-mails. Three major interrelated and complex themes emerged from the data analysis. These recurrent themes were (a) race and cultural-based stereotype, (b) social inclusion and communication challenges, and (c) PE teachers’ learning experiences.There is pressing need for PE teacher candidates and practicing teachers to receive professional preparation and development training in implementing culturally and ethnolinguistically relevant pedagogies effectively.

Unable to meet each other, freshmen at University of Tsukuba created the project “Our #Amabie Expression” both as a record and as a way of sharing their experiences (https://www.2020freshers-artanddesign-u-tsukuba.net/). Inspired by the response, this session calls for works from mediums of expression (e.g. literature cinema, photomedia, pop culture and cartoons) that use art to document life during a pandemic. It aims to give a platform for international dialogue towards building resilient societies.

We ranked 33rd in the Library & Information Management category in the QS ranking, and our school is a member of the iSchool.
We are actively engaged in advanced research on library and information science.
In this session, we will present the results of our research on various aspects of information infrastructure: infrastructure services for using research data, the role of libraries as a place, a model for evaluating public libraries, providing information to socially excluded people, and sharing information of interest in online spaces.

The Nippon Foundation Central Asia – Human Resource Development Project members specializing in different fields will present their research papers on a variety of different topics. The organizer of the session, Dr. Kajiyama will analyze films produced in local languages in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan and provide comparative analysis of their respective national identities. Dr. Insebayeva will explore the articulation of Kazakh national identity through Kazakh popular music, shedding light on how non-state actors involved in the process of (re)imagining the nation fit into domestic national identity construction. Mr. Gulomaliev, will present his research on the dialect map created as a result of an on-site survey of Wakhi people living in Central Asia widely. The aim of the session is to provide a fresh perspective on the on-going developments in Central Asian region.
