Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is my great pleasure to welcome everyone to Tsukuba Global Science Week 2026. We are very delighted to be able to bring everyone together for the fourteenth time.

In 2019, we launched the Tsukuba Conference, which is similar in spirit to TGSW. For instance, both showcase and highlight young scholars. TGSW is a platform for discussing research and its contributions to society, while the Tsukuba Conference, whose main theme is “science and society,” provides a forum to debate social needs and the research necessary to meet them. TGSW 2022 was held in a hybrid format through face-to-face and online sessions. It was the first time in three years that the event had featured face-to-face content, with restrictions against COVID-19 relaxed, but many sessions were still held online. The most recent gathering, TGSW 2024, was mostly in-person on our campus and provided an opportunity for lively discussions and exchange. In 2026, we look forward to the conference becoming an even greater platform for exchange across a wider range of fields, countries, and regions.

The history of University of Tsukuba dates back approximately 150 years to the establishment of a normal school, Japan’s first national institution of higher education, by the Meiji government. In October 1973, a little over fifty years ago, the University relocated from Tokyo to Tsukuba and was reborn as a comprehensive institution of higher education.

Since its founding, University of Tsukuba has aimed to be open to society and the world and to pursue transdisciplinary education and research. In accordance with these principles, we are delighted to host TGSW, which gathers together participants from not only a diverse range of academic fields but also many different countries. Initially focusing on the medical sciences, TGSW has evolved to address a wide variety of fields, ranging from the natural sciences to the humanities, with prominent researchers from more than 30 different countries taking part.

TGSW serves as a platform to showcase world-class research conducted in collaboration with institutions in Tsukuba Science City and our international partners. Beyond this aim, it provides a forum to address the complex, interconnected global challenges we face, such as sustainable public health, food and energy security, environmental risks, geopolitical conflicts, poverty, and inequality. Addressing these issues requires cross-border collaboration and innovation that brings together scientists across disciplines, nationalities, cultures, and worldviews. By breaking down conventional barriers, TGSW offers an invaluable space for dialogue on how science can contribute to solutions for these global challenges.

We are living in an era of global transformation. Fostering diverse academic dialogue and strengthening networks that transcend borders and disciplines in this context is TSGW’s central mission. TGSW 2026 will be held primarily in a face-to-face format but also make effective use of online platforms to enable participation from a broader range of regions and fields. By leveraging the strengths of both formats, we warmly welcome the participation of colleagues and friends from around the world.

In closing, I would like to thank all of you for your participation and sincerely hope that the range of sessions on offer will foster fruitful conversations for us all.

親愛なる皆様へ

今年で14回目を迎える「つくばグローバル・サイエンス・ウィーク（TGSW）2026」に皆様をお迎えできることを大変嬉しく思います。

2019年に、TGSWと基本的な考え方、たとえば若手中心という考え方、を同じくする「筑波会議」を新たに立ち上げました。TGSWが研究の側から社会への還元を大きな視点とするのに対して、「筑波会議」は科学と社会というメインテーマを掲げて、社会の側から研究を見つめるといった様態となっています
コロナ禍に伴う制限が緩和されたTGSW2022は3年ぶりに対面形式を取り入れた開催となりましたが、まだ多くのセッションがオンラインで行われました。前回のTGSW2024は、本学内を会場として対面会議を主体とし、会場での熱い議論が交わされました。2026年は、さらに、広範な分野・国と地域との交流の場と機会になることを期待しています。

筑波大学の歴史は、明治政府が日本で最初の高等教育機関である師範学校として設立した約150年前に遡ります。
そして今から50年余前の1973年10月、本学は東京からつくばに移転し、総合的な高等教育機関として生まれ変わりました。

筑波大学は開学以来、社会や世界に開かれた大学を目指してきました。そして今も、国家間、産学官組織間、学問分野間などに存在するあらゆるボーダーを越えて、学際的な教育・研究を進めています。このような理念のもと、多様な学問分野のみならず、様々な国から多くの参加者が集うTGSWを開催しています。
TGSWは、最初はひとつの学問分野に焦点を当てたイベントでしたが、現在では30カ国以上から著名な研究者をお招きし、自然科学から人文科学まで幅広い分野のセッションを提供しています。

TGSWは、筑波研究学園都市を拠点とする国公立研究機関や海外協定校と連携し、世界最高水準の研究を紹介するとともに、国際的な研究交流を促進する場です。しかし、その役割は研究成果の共有にとどまりません。私たちは今、地球規模で複雑化・重層化する課題に直面しています。公衆衛生の持続可能性、食料・エネルギー安全保障、気候変動と環境リスク、地政学的緊張や紛争、貧困と格差――これらの課題は相互に関連し、単一の分野や国だけでは解決できません。こうした課題に立ち向かうためには、国境を越えたイノベーションと協働が不可欠です。専門分野、国籍、文化、価値観の違いを超え、科学者コミュニティが連携することが求められています。TGSWは、既存の枠組みや壁を越えた対話を通じて、課題解決への道筋を探るための重要なフォーラムとして機能しています。
世界は今、変革期にあると言われます。このような時代において多様な学術的議論を深め、国境や分野を越えたネットワークを育むことこそが、TGSWの重要な使命です。
TGSW 2026では、対面形式を中心としつつ、オンライン形式も活用することで、より幅広い地域や分野からの参加を可能にします。それぞれの形式の特性を生かし、多くの皆様にご参加いただけることを心より歓迎いたします。

最後に、ご参加くださる皆様に改めて感謝申し上げるとともに、様々なセッションを通じて実りある対話が生まれることを心より願っております。
