Day 3 | Hands-on Workshop: International Comparisons of Painting Materials and Techniques

This international arts programme brings together 18 art universities and research institutions from Japan, Germany, Sweden, and the United States, with the University of Tsukuba serving as its hub. Under the theme “Materials × Crossing Borders,” it integrates an international painting exhibition, symposium, student-led gallery talks, and hands-on workshops into a three-day programme that connects artistic practice with research on materials and techniques. Through painting materials as a shared point of inquiry, the programme seeks to foster academic and practical dialogue across national and educational boundaries and to present a model for the next generation of international art education.

Day 3 offers a hands-on workshop that explores painting materials and techniques from Germany and Japan through direct comparison. An introductory lecture will provide historical and theoretical contexts for painting materials, followed by three workshop sessions: one led by an invited lecturer from Germany, a session on Japanese painting materials and techniques led by a faculty member from the University of Tsukuba, and a collaborative session led by a Japan–Germany student team. Through practical experimentation, participants will examine material preparation, handling properties, visual effects, and durability, gaining an experiential understanding of both the connections and differences among diverse approaches to painting.

Day 3｜実技ワークショップ：絵画材料と技法の国際比較

本セッションは、筑波大学をハブに、日本・ドイツ・スウェーデン・米国の計18の美術大学・研究機関が連携して実施する国際芸術プログラムである。「Materials × Crossing Borders（絵画素材による越境と対話）」をテーマに、国際絵画展、シンポジウム、学生主導ギャラリートーク、実技ワークショップを3日間の連続企画として実施し、制作実践と材料・技法研究を横断的に結びつける。絵画材料を媒介として、国や教育制度を越えた学術的・実践的対話を行い、次世代の国際的美術教育モデルを提示することを目的とする。

3日目は、ドイツと日本の絵画材料・技法を比較しながら実践的に学ぶワークショップを実施する。導入レクチャーでは、絵画材料の歴史的展開と理論的背景を共有する。続く三つのワークショップでは、まずドイツ側招聘講師による絵画材料と技法、次に筑波大学教員による日本の絵画材料と技法、最後に日本・ドイツの学生チームによる協働的な実験と対話を取り上げる。参加者は、材料の調製、使用感、表現効果、保存性を実作業を通して検討し、多様な絵画技法・材料の接点と相違を体験的に理解する。
