Day 3 | Hands-on Workshops

On Day 3 of Materials × Crossing Borders, three hands-on workshops will offer participants opportunities to experience painting materials and techniques through direct practice. Instructors and students from Japan and Germany will explore the possibilities of painting materials and artistic expression through different materials and working methods.

Capacity: approximately 15–20 participants per workshop
Eligibility: Students in Art and Design and invited participants only
Walk-in participation will be accepted if spaces remain available.

Workshop 1 | German Painting Materials and Techniques

Make pastels, draw with charcoal, and exchange drawings
Tutors: Annett Stenzel / Bettina Scholz / Caroline Streck

Participants will make pastel chalks using pigments and tragacanth, experiment with charcoal drawing, and exchange drawings with other participants before continuing the works with pastels. Through these activities, the workshop explores materials, drawing, dialogue, and transformation.

Workshop 2 | Japanese Painting Materials and Techniques

Create a small Nihonga painting using mineral pigments
Instructor: Hiroyuki Yamamoto

After a brief introduction to Japanese painting materials, especially mineral pigments, participants will create a small painting of approximately 10 cm. The workshop offers an opportunity to experience the distinctive colour and texture of mineral pigments through direct practice.

Workshop 3 | Japanese–German Student Collaborative Workshop

Combine beeswax, washi, and a variety of other materials to create mixed-media works
Organized and facilitated by Japanese and German students

This experimental workshop is collaboratively developed by Japanese and German students. Using beeswax and washi as a base, participants will combine pigments, gold leaf, photography, and other materials and media to explore new possibilities for painting and artistic expression.

Day 3｜実技ワークショップ

「Materials × Crossing Borders ― 絵画素材による越境と対話」の3日目には、絵画材料と技法を実際に体験する3つの実技ワークショップを開催します。日本とドイツの教員・学生が協働し、それぞれ異なる素材と制作方法を通して、絵画材料と表現の可能性を探ります。

Workshop 1｜ドイツの絵画材料と技法

パステルを作る・木炭で描く・作品を交換する
講師：Annett Stenzel / Bettina Scholz / Caroline Streck

顔料とトラガカントゴムを使ったパステル作り、木炭によるドローイング、参加者同士の作品交換などを通して、素材、描画、対話、変化を体験します。

Workshop 2｜日本画の材料と技法

岩絵具を使って、小さな日本画を制作する
講師：山本 浩之

日本画の材料、特に岩絵具について簡単な説明を受けた後、約10cmの小作品を制作します。岩絵具特有の色彩や質感を、実際の制作を通して体験します。

Workshop 3｜日独学生共同ワークショップ

蜜蝋と和紙をベースに、さまざまな素材を組み合わせて制作する
企画・進行：日本・ドイツの学生チーム

日本とドイツの学生が共同で企画する実験的なワークショップです。蜜蝋と和紙をベースに、顔料、金箔、写真など複数の素材やメディアを組み合わせながら、新たな絵画表現の可能性を探ります。
