Day 3 | Hands-on Workshop: International Comparisons of Painting Materials and Techniques

Under the theme “Materials × Crossing Borders,” this three-day session brings together art universities and research institutions from Japan, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Through an international traveling exhibition, symposium, student-led gallery talk, and hands-on workshops, the program promotes dialogue and exchange across national and educational boundaries through painting materials and techniques.

Day 3 features three hands-on workshops that explore and compare painting materials and techniques from Japan and Germany. The workshops will be developed and led respectively by invited instructors from Germany, instructors from Japan, and a collaborative team of Japanese and German students. Each workshop will introduce approaches to materials, techniques, and artistic processes shaped by different cultural and educational contexts.

Through practical experimentation, participants will examine the preparation and handling of materials, their visual effects, and their durability. By working and exchanging ideas with instructors and students, participants will gain an experiential understanding of the similarities and differences between painting practices in the two countries and consider how these approaches might inform future artistic practice and art education.

Day 3｜実技ワークショップ：絵画材料と技法の国際比較

本セッションでは、「Materials × Crossing Borders（絵画素材による越境と対話）」をテーマに、日本・ドイツ・スウェーデン・米国の美術大学・研究機関が連携し、国際巡回展、シンポジウム、学生主導ギャラリートーク、実技ワークショップを3日間にわたって開催します。絵画の材料・技法を通して、国や教育制度を越えた対話と交流を目指します。

3日目は、日本とドイツの絵画材料・技法を比較しながら、実践的に学ぶ3つのワークショップを行います。ドイツ側の招聘教員、日本側の教員、日本・ドイツの学生チームがそれぞれ企画を担当し、異なる文化的・教育的背景に基づく材料の選択や技法、制作方法を紹介します。

参加者は、材料の調製、使用感、表現効果、保存性などを実作業を通して検討します。講師や学生、参加者がともに制作と対話を行うことで、各国の絵画技法・材料の共通点と相違点を体験的に理解し、今後の制作や美術教育への展開を探ります。
